2. Bartok's cyle of six string quartets is universally considered to be one of the finest of the Twentieth Century. My reference recording remains the Takacs Quartet, recorded for London Records in , but this Alban Berg Quartett cycle recorded from to is a fine alternative in a different style. 3. The New Hungarian Quartet really breathes life into this cycle, and gives the Bartok quartets the full spectrum of emotions, energy, and verve, they deserve. I have heard a number of recordings of the Bartok Stings Quartets over the years, including the Tokyo String Quartet, and too often they sound like a sterile, lifeless, academic exercises.5/5(3).
